Rare Planetary Alignment to Be Visible in Kuwait on February 28

KUWAIT CITY, Feb. 26, 2026 — The Al-Ujairi Scientific Center announced that the second phase of the “Scorpions” season began on February 23, marking the final period of winter in Kuwait and signaling a gradual transition toward spring.

The center explained that while this phase represents winter’s farewell, cold weather will not disappear immediately. Seasonal transitions in Kuwait are typically accompanied by fluctuating temperatures, with alternating warm and cold spells expected over the coming weeks.

Meteorologists indicate that temperature instability during late February and early March is a natural atmospheric adjustment from winter systems to more stable spring conditions.

Saad Al-Saud to Begin March 8

Following the conclusion of the Scorpions season, Kuwait will enter the first phase of the Al-Hamimin season, known as “Saad Al-Saud,” beginning March 8 and lasting 13 days.

This period includes what is traditionally referred to as the “old woman’s cold” — a cold snap that arrives after relatively warm days.

Folklore Behind the “Old Woman’s Cold”

The term originates from Gulf folklore describing an elderly shepherd who sheared her sheep after feeling warmer temperatures, only for a sudden cold wave to return, causing the loss of her flock.

The story remains a cultural reminder of unpredictable seasonal changes during late winter in the region.

Possible Late March Cold Wave

The center also noted the possibility of another cold spell during the final week of March, sometimes referred to as the “seller of the fool’s cloak.”

Although it does not occur annually, this phenomenon can bring sharp temperature drops in certain seasons.

The term “fat scorpion,” associated with this period, refers to the abundance of spring vegetation, when grazing animals gain weight as plant life begins to flourish.
